Aussie attitude towards sports

Well i have nothing against the australians and their attitude towards sports. in fact i admire the tenacity and the fighting spirit that they display in all forms of sports. But i am writing this blog in response to couple of quotations which caught my eye while i was reading the online version of 'The Australian'
....It was an amazing scene then and one that steeled a couple of the Australian players to take them (the Indian cricket team) down a peg or two. Those celebrations were reprised to a lesser extent when the Indian players clambered aboard Gambhir's new car and did a lap of honour of Brabourne stadium.
If you looked up in the stands as they did you could almost see the ghost of English captains past, wondering what on earth these colonials (sic!) had done to the game.

The aussie approach is winning or nothing...well what happened to the simple joys of just enjoying the sport? i am talking of the approach that many in the english county circuit as well as many players in the indian circuit have...just go out there and enjoy the game...the australians are so obsessed with winning and winning percentages and strategies that they immediately want to dominate and pulverize the opponents...

Well i immensely enjoyed the hammering which Aussies received in the recently concluded Rugby world cup 2007. And they have not yet stopped whining..!! If you look at the dignified way the english team behaved and the comments of the english captain after the defeat in the final...i think that exemplified the approach a sportsman and the supporters should take. Go out there ...enjoy the game, give it your all, and hope for the best....and yes dont whine in defeat!
Why cant the Aussies learn to become dignified even in defeat? whats wrong if you lose on the sporting field? I dont know...it just seems to be some much in the psyche of an australian to impose himself physically when in the presence of others...maybe that is the reason why they are quite so good in contact sports...but then they should understand that winnings is NOT EVERYTHING....it is how you conduct yourself in the game which endears you to followers of the game and makes even the opposition fans clap for you....i guess that is the biggest compliement that a sportsperson can receive - Getting cheered by the opposition fans!

So i guess my message is: it is how you play the sport that counts and not the result. (Obviously you should be competitive)

About Fonts....
Let us start with what a font is?
...as described extensively in Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_font

A computer font is an electronic data file containing a set of glyphs, characters, or symbols such as dingbats. Although the term "font" once referred to interchangeable typefaces using mechanical components such as a typeball element or a daisy wheel, most modern fonts are used in computing. There are three basic kinds of computer font file data formats:

  • Bitmap fonts consist of a series of dots or pixels representing the image of each glyph in each face and size.
  • Outline fonts use Bézier curves, drawing instructions and mathematical formulas to describe each glyph, which make the character outlines scalable to any size.
  • Stroke fonts use a series of specified lines and additional information to define the profile, or size and shape of the line in a specific face and size, which together describe the appearance of the glyph.
Well so what? Nothing i guess...but know what? That is the first thing that catches my attention when i look at or read any electronic document. And over time i guess all of us tend to gravitate towards some particular font. Well i have known people who insist on using Comic Sans only. Personally i tend to favor Verdana. I have noticed that i use the Verdana font even while creating XLS spreadsheets!
Well do selection of fonts portray any characteristics or personality traits of the person? Frankly i don't know...but well it is a topic which has got a good potential to be studied deeply. (do i get an IPR on this?!)
So i have taken an important decision that all my (infrequent) postings will be using the Verdana Font
